Artist: Jennifer Steinkamp Title: Queen Lili'oukalani Date: 2022 Dimensions: 141 x 74 feet Photography: Harvest Moon Exhibition History: Hawai'i Triennial 2022, Iolani Palace, curated by Dr. Melissa Chiu, February 16 - 18, 2022.
Description: The video projection seeks to return the flowers of Uluhaimalama to the Palace in a deeply symbolic act that honors the ousted Queen and her legacy. Following the US takeover of Hawaii, January 24, 1895, Queen Lili'uokalani was imprisoned in her palace for two years. Her loyalists brought her flowers wrapped in newspapers. This subtle act of subversion kept her appraised of the news. The former Queen kept a record of the gifts, this list was used as the source for the flowers projected onto the Palace.
