Artist: Jennifer Steinkamp Title: Tra La La Boom Date: 2001 Dimensions: 7 feet wide 12 feet high, 5 minutes Equipment: 1 Epson 5350 1500 lumen projector, DVD player Photo credit: Robert Wedemeyer, courtesy ACME, Los Angeles and greengrassi, London. Exhibition History: COLA, City of Los Angeles Individual Artist Fellowship Award, The Skirball Cultural Center, Los Angeles, California, curated by Noel Korten, May 25 - July 15, 2001. Description: There is a moment in this piece where the projection completely disappears, leaving a blank wall, and then it soon reappears. An effect conceptually similar to the effect seen in Phase = Time (1999) except while in Phase = Time the illusion of reverse motion is created by an after image effect, in Tra La La Boom the effect is to dispell the illusion of the virtual space by making a jarring break from the mesmerizing depth of the projection.
